Installing New Art Work
Framing
Before determining how you will install a new piece of artwork, for many the process starts with framing, (if it is not a sculpture or a three demension piece). This is my favorite part of the process as it gives me the opportunity to personalize the piece blend my new piece with the aesthetic of my home. When choosing a frame here are my tips:
Pay the extra dollars and upgrade your glass to museum quality or plexi glass. Both will protect the piece from fading and prevent glare.
Pick a frame that complements vs. competes with the frame.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with materials and frames which are different. I love to choose a modern frame with clean lines. However, some of my best pieces are those out of my comfort zone and choosing a framing that complements the artwork to make a bold statement to your art.
Space Integration
In my opinion, the most important thing when installing art is to get the arrangement down - in terms of visual distance, right. Make sure your artwork is displayed at a good eye-level. The best distance from floor to the center of the art is 156 centimeters. Use your discrection depending on the wall size.
Even when arranging multiple works on the wall, the work that is lowest should be at a good height so that the viewer does not have to bend to look at the work. I like to take a few and place them on the floor and play with the different spacing to see what looks best.
Keep Away from Sunlight, Heat and Moisture
Protect your asset! Avoid locations that could place your piece in harm’s way for example a fireplace or locations too close to natural light.
